Stone therapy has become one of the most requested massage treatments in spas and practices around the world. It can be used hot or cold and your clients will love the feel and energy of these natural healing stones.

Hot stone therapy increases circulation and will leave your clients feeling grounded, relaxed and happy.

Hot stone massage will also help you as a therapist by taking the stress out of your wrists, hands and thumbs.

We are based in London in the UK and work with some of the leading suppliers and schools in the USA and Worldwide for Stone Massage products.

A Brief History of Hot Stone Massage

The use of hot stones has been recorded in history for over 3000 years; records show their use in ancient China and India and more recently by the Native American Indians. By looking at ancient cultures and civilizations we can see that as humans we have used hot stones for eons, using them for sacred rituals and for heating our homes

Native Americans from earliest times have used hot stones as part of a hot stone massage treatment in their sweat lodge ceremonies; the customs and healing rituals in which the stones were used incorporated laying the stones in patterns on the body, carrying or wearing stones for health and protection.

In the sweat lodge ceremony, the use of the four elements fire, water, air and earth in the heating preparation of the stones for the ritual is a very important part of it. During these ceremonies the medicine woman would pass a perfectly round hot stone around the circle for use to rub anywhere there was pain or discomfort. Native North American Indian women used hot stone on their abdomen to relieve the pain of the menstruation; cold stones would be applied after childbirth to impede the blood flow.

During the time of the Roman Empire was the creation of the famous Roman baths. Many of the rituals held by the Romans involved hot and cold plunge pools and hot and cold stones to lie on. Many of theses practices exist today in the form of saunas, hot immersion baths, hydrotherapy and the use and marble stone / cold plunge pools. All of these are thriving today in Health Clubs and Spas throughout Europe, North America, and Asia.

Massage with Hot stones combine the benefits of hydrotherapy and thermo-therapy – (the use of heat applications) using stones with the strokes of massage to produce a deep, comforting and healing treatment. The heat of the stones warms the skin, which allows for the absorption of moisturizing and therapeutic oils, while at the same time preparing and relaxing the musculature of the body so the therapist can work into the deeper muscle layers. Benefits of thermo-therapy include:

• increased local circulation
• improved blood flow to surrounding tissues
• greater ability to remove waste products and toxins from the area

An additional benefit is that the stones provide a magnificent tool that creates a sense of depth in the massage without the extra wear and tear on the therapist’s hands.

In this age of progress, we have an opportunity to take and use some of the ancient rituals in our modern day practice. We should do it with respect and reverence to the stones and to the people.

What is Basalt?

Basalt: a dark coloured igneous rock erupted from volcanoes and fissures on the Earth's surface. Flows of basalt cover 70% of the Earth's surface, and large areas of the surfaces of the other terrestrial planets, so it is a very important crustal rock. It is produced by the partial melting of rocks deep inside the Earth's mantle.Igneous rocks - One of the three main groups of rocks, which are produced from molten magma Basalt is the most common type of igneous rock used in hot stone massage. The surface of the earth is made of these igneous rocks, with the majority of the ocean floor being basalt, and nearly all of the continents being composed of granite. When basalt is freshly formed (which is a relative term), it is black or grayish black depending on the quantity of nickel present, although will often weather to a reddish or greenish crust. There has been a lot of promotional efforts to create a believe that black basalt stones are best to use in hot stone massage, the fact of the matter is that all colours of basalt stones can be used for hot as well as cold stone massage, just as long as it is basalt.

Why Basalt is it so good for Hot Stone Massage?

Molten lava cools following a volcanic eruption and when the lava cools, above ground or under water, the process occurs quickly and the crystals that form are very small, invisible to the human eye. Below ground, the cooling process occurs more slowly, and the crystals that form are larger. For this reason, igneous rocks are given names based upon two things: composition (what they are made of) and texture (the size of the crystals). Basalt, itself, is considered a mafic silicate rock. Among other characteristics, mafic minerals and rocks are generally dark in color and high in specific gravity. This is in large part due to the amount of iron, magnesium, and several other relatively heavy elements that mix with the silica and oxygen during the formation process. It is also the presence of these elements that gives basalt stones their ability to attain, hold, and radiate a steady and soothing heat for long periods of time.

Alternatively sedimentary rocks (such as river stones), look more attractive (yellow, brown, pink, or white), but are not ideal because they heat at such different rates depending on their composition, and they tend, over time, to crack. It takes harvesters a long time to find the necessary stones to make a sedimentary, or river stone set, but the truth of the matter is that function over form needs to be the rule when using your stones to treat people. Black basalt might not be as appealing to look at as these coloured stones, but their composition is most definitely what is needed to perform hot stone massage.
